My second story idea includes two main characters, Michael and Matthew. These two teenage boys have been friends since 4th grade. Now as 9th graders they begin to get themselves in trouble. Michael's family situation is not the greatest and he begins to act out for attention. Because Michael and Matthew go everywhere and do anything together, after a unplanned robbery at a small town convenience store the two boys find themselves split apart, fighting with their parents, the law, and each other.
An idea that needs a lot of development and characterization.

I think this has great potential for the short story idea. I am reading in to things, but I am assuming it was Michael that caused the robbery - as an act for attention, probably - and that Matthew's life might not be as bad.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of questions that went through my mind...which I am refraining from asking. I think because there was so many questions, it makes it that a) there are so many routes you could take, and b) I am already interested in the characters.
I'd say both of your ideas have potential, Kellie -- but this seems to have the most potential for real conflict. The story of the boy going to kindergarten would -- I think -- need something more thrown into it to drive the story -- to draw readers in. All children face these anxieties -- so what might make his fears worth writing about -- specific to him?
ReplyDeleteComing to this story, there is, as I said, a lot of potential. One thing to consider as you draft -- there's a lot going on here. At what point will you dip into their story? Once there, which of these many conflicts do you think will be at the heart of your story? Notice I said "as you draft" -- don't make up your mind right away. Write -- and see where these characters take you!
